From bits and saddles, to working a cutting horse in a round pen, to helping start the NCHA and hosting the first futurity, Buster Welch made cutting what it is today.

“Anybody that has [ridden] a cutting horse has been influenced by him whether they know it or not,” $9.1 million earner Austin Shepard said of his good friend Welch, who passed away June 12th, 2022 at his Abilene home at 94 years old.

How did you get into cutting?

“My dad and mom raised horses, and they wanted to upgrade their program. There was a guy that had a son of Little Peppy. So we made a deal to breed some mares to his stud… We did some welding to pay for the breedings. That man was Tom Merryman who is now my father-in-law. I quit school in 8th grade and I was over there helping my dad with welding. I saw Tom cutting and he asked me if I wanted to turn back for him. I had no clue what that was but I said yeah I’ll try it. I started helping him and ended up working for him for 3 years…”

Hayden Upton Wins 2017 Super Stakes Ltd Open Classic

It all came together for Hayden Upton who claimed his first victory in the Will Rogers when he won the Ltd Open Classic Final at Fort Worth.
Hayden rode Superfly and marked a 222, some 6 points ahead of the field to win.

Hayden took home more than $4,100 for the win, taking his total winnings to $165,000.

Superfly, a 5-year-old gelding by Smooth As A Cat out of Lenas Horn, is owned by Brett and Shaye Johnson. The horse has been trained by Hayden throughout it’s career, with $26,000 in lifetime earnings.
Hayden Spoke with Simone Cobb about how he successfully changed his cow strategy for the final.

Jose Cruz came second on Wild Starz with a 216, while Wes Ashlock claimed third aboard Creyzy Eights just one point behind.


Wes Ashlock Does a Double Take Winning His Second NCHA Super Stakes John Deere Classic Final

Wes Ashlock from took out the first final of the 2016 NCHA Super Stakes with a convincing win in the John Deere Classic at Fort Worth.

Wes rode Metallics Star and marked a 221, two and half points in front of second place to take home $4,108 in prize money. The win takes Wes’s earning to date to more than $216,000.

Metallics Star was owned by John and Jana Thacker. The horse has now won more than $50,000.

It’s a double take for Wes, who won the very same event just two years ago on Amafoxy Cat (also owned by the Thackers). He spoke with CHTO’s Simone Cobb about his win.

Todd Gann placed second on Hevvy Metal, with an 218.5, just a half point in front of third place getter, Andrew Coates aboard Miss Martini Boon.
