Andrew Coates

Hall Of Fame trainer, Andrew Coates, started his first horse at 13 years old in Australia and now he and his wife Nicole own and operate Southern Cross Ranch in Esparto, California. A few years ago they chose to change their business model to keep their family together. Coates now trains 2 year olds and shows a few 3 year olds. Coates said they are very blessed to have incredible clients that have stuck with them through the transition as well as great friends like Morgan Cromer and Eric Wisehart. Coates also raises and sells Wagyu Cattle, and runs a feedlot.

The Heart of Cutting

With all the recent turmoil in cutting with declining membership, staff turn-over and controversies over how to make the sport fairer and more accessible, it can be hard to stay positive. But two cutters who have optimism to share are Star Roberts and Amy Jones.

When they started out in cutting, both knew that they weren’t going to go buy a six-figure cutting horse, if ever. They each began with a horse that was at their level and gradually moved up in horse power as they developed. Their trainers helped them learn and improve, knowing full well that they were not going to spend a lot of money on a horse. As a result, both riders have thoroughly enjoyed their time in the sport, making great friends.

Jon Burgess clinches 2016 NCHA Super Stakes John Deere Final

Jon Burgess has won the John Deere Division of the four-year-old final in 2016 NCHA Super Stakes at Fort Worth.

Jon, who rode Littlemak, snuck past Greg Wright to mark a 219.5 and win by just half a point.

Jon, from Cleburne, Tx, won just shy of $6,000. Littlemak is by Stalights Gypsy out of Justa Swinging Gal.
He told CHTO’s Simone Cobb he has big plans for the horse.

Greg Wright scored 219 on Aristocratic Star to clinch the Reserve Champion title, followed by Andrew Coates and Robbie Boyce, who split third with a 216 aboard Reysin Autumn and Stylish Purpose respectively.


Wes Ashlock Does a Double Take Winning His Second NCHA Super Stakes John Deere Classic Final

Wes Ashlock from took out the first final of the 2016 NCHA Super Stakes with a convincing win in the John Deere Classic at Fort Worth.

Wes rode Metallics Star and marked a 221, two and half points in front of second place to take home $4,108 in prize money. The win takes Wes’s earning to date to more than $216,000.

Metallics Star was owned by John and Jana Thacker. The horse has now won more than $50,000.

It’s a double take for Wes, who won the very same event just two years ago on Amafoxy Cat (also owned by the Thackers). He spoke with CHTO’s Simone Cobb about his win.

Todd Gann placed second on Hevvy Metal, with an 218.5, just a half point in front of third place getter, Andrew Coates aboard Miss Martini Boon.


Mike Wood and Andrew Coates Victorious In the 2015 NCHA World Finals $15,000 Novice Division

Mike Wood clinched the World Title in the 2015 NCHA $15,000 Novice Division at Fort Worth.

The leader coming into the World Finals series, Mike rode El Gato Bonito and put in a strong performance to stay ahead of the pack and claim the championship.

He spoke with CHTO’s Simone Cobb about his massive Finals week, where he 16 horses of his own and his clients make it to the top 15!

Andrew Coates – 2015 NCHA $15,000 Novice World Finals Show Champion

Andrew Coates wowed the crowd when he scored a 227 in the final Go Round to take out the Show Champion title of the $15,000 Novice division during the 2015 NCHA World Finals.

Andrew, a trainer from California, rode This Kittys Smart, marking a strong 222 in the first go round. He
spoke with CHTO’s Simone Cobb about his awesome finals in the Watt Arena, Fort Worth.
