That’s according to someone who’s had plenty of success of the show pen, $3-million trainer Grant Setnicka. Not only that, Setnicka’s clients also enjoy plenty of success themselves. Setnicka shares his tips on how to set yourself up for a satisfying experience in cutting.

Member Spotlight – Ty Cole – North Fork, Idaho

Ty Cole Ty Cole got his start riding range colts in Montana. After attending a cutting, Ty’s fascination with horsemanship was sparked. Ten years later, he specializes in yearlings, trains them for a year or two and then sells them mostly to cutting and cow horse competitors.

To learn his craft, he spent 6 months riding with Zane Davis. He said everything changed for him when he worked for Tom Campbell, based in Texas. Tom had a good string of horses and soon Tom said, “Alright, you’re up.” Ty got on his A string horses for the next few days. He said that helped him develop feel and how to cow up a horse. He said he felt those horses think independently about the cow.

Grant Setnicka Claims Open Classic Final at 2017 Summer Spectacular

It was a humble Grant Setnicka who hit a career high when he clinched the final of the Open Classic Challenge at the 2017 NCHA Summer Spectacular.

Grant and Ichis My Choice pulled out some big stops to mark 229, some 6 points ahead of the field.

Grant and Ichis My Choice won 2016 Horse of The Year when she was just a four year old. Ichis My Choice is by Cat Ichi out of My Little Abra. With this win, the horse will surpass $300,000 in earnings.

Thanking his team and J Five Ranch, Grant told CHTO’s Simone Cobb his first major win in the Will Rogers hadn’t quite sunk in yet.

Beau Galyean won the Reserve buckle on Metallic Rebel with a 223, and James Payne came third aboard PG Heavily Armed.

Jimmy Baros Claims 2017 NCHA Super Stakes Unltd Amateur Classic

Jimmy Baros from Blanco, TX clinched his first major title at the 2017 NCHA Super Stakes Unlimited Amateur Classic in Forth Worth.

Overjoyed with his horse, Two Time Dual, Jimmy marked a 220 to beat out 37 other finalists for the buckle.

He told CHTO’s Simone Cobb that his trainer Grant Setnicka helped make it all happen.

Grant Setnicka and Ichis My Choice Win 2016 Horse Of The Year!

After a hard-fought year of competition, Grant Setnicka and Ichis My Choice won the 2016 Horse of the Year title by the narrowest of margins, one point!

It came down to a nail biter in the last go round of the Mercuria World Finals where Grant and his horse had to wait out a review before the decision came down in their favor.

The pair beat out Matt Miller and Amandas CD for the prestigious title.

Making the win even more noteworthy, Ichis My Choice is just a 4-year-old. The mare is owned by the Jaeggi Family as part of J Five Horse Ranch Mgmt Llc and has now won more than $300,000 in earnings.

Grant told CHTO’s Simone Cobb his win was immensely satisfying and that hauling for the title was an incredible learning experience.

Kenny Platt Wins 2016 NCHA Super Stakes Open Final!

Watch Kenny Platt’s outstanding run in the 2016 NCHA Super Stakes Open four-year-old Final!

Kenny dominated the field with an impressive 228 aboard Moms Stylish Player, some five and a half points ahead of the field. With this win, Kenny has now made it into the NCHA Rider’s Hall of Fame by surpassing the million dollar mark in earnings.

Moms Stylish Player is by Lizzys Gotta Player out of Moms Stylish Babe and has now won more than $100,000.

Kenny gave a great interview with CHTO following his win, however technology failed us and we are unable to bring it to you so please enjoy his run.

Grant Setnicka had a great run on Ichis My Choice to mark a 222.5 and claim the reserve championship while Geoffrey Sheehan placed third riding Cromed Out Cat with a 222.
