Raised on a cattle ranch in Saskatchewan, Canada, Doug Sapergia has always been surrounded by horses and cattle and after 47 years in the farrier business, has many friends and customers in the cutting industry.

Living south of Calgary, Alberta, in the heart of horse country, and showing reined cow horses for a number of years, Sapergia decided he wanted to try his hand at cutting.

“I have always wanted to cut but never really had the opportunity until the last few years. I ride with Doug Reinhardt and Brad Pedersen, but have so much help from all of the different trainers in Alberta, I just can’t thank them enough.”

“We are very fortunate to have a group of trainers that will always stop and give you advice and help you out,” Sapergia said.

“My biggest struggle is staying balanced on a cow and work to correct that in lessons and on the flag,” said Sapergia.

What does he love the most about CHTO?

“I love CHTO because the videos are all relevant and they have a wide variety of topics to watch. I really like to watch the overhead views, where you can see how the cattle roll and can really see the position of the horse.”

Gayle Weber fell in love with horses at a young age. After her kids graduated from school she had free time to fill and some friends introduced her to cutting in 2008. She attended two cutting clinics, one with Lindy Burch one with Faron Hightower. Weber competes in the 25k Novice Non-Pro, and the 50 AM.

One of her goals includes getting her horse out of the 25k NNP. Weber is very dedicated. She lives in Montana so she spends a lot of time traveling to shows. Weber said there is one show in Montana that is two and a half hours away, the rest of them are four to six hours away or further.

Colter on Sassy when winning his first buckle.

Colter Klemm had always worked with cow horses but after riding for cutting horse trainer Matt Budge last winter he realized cutting was what he wanted to pursue seriously. It was the horse power and the quality of the horses that attracted him to the sport. He showed for the first time in November where he won his first buckle.

He said he really enjoys the learning process and watching different methods of training horses. Since Klemm has ridden mostly cow horses, learning how to draw back and thinking back has been a new concept he has found challenging.

Roberta Rollins began her riding career with Western Pleasure Futurity horses. She and her trainer, Jaime Bissell, went to Tom Lyons’ ranch in 1994 where Rollins got a taste of cutting. After a 3 day crash course in the sport, she purchased Doc’s Lord Monty and attended her first cutting show.

“I was terrified at the thought of showing in cutting, when my background was a slow lope around the pen on a pleasure futurity horse,” Rollins remembered.

Cody Patterson started off with humble beginnings in the horse business cleaning stalls for Phil Hanson Sr, from California (Futurity Champion Phil Hanson in Texas is his son). At the time, Hanson trained cutters but he also trained cow horses and made the Snaffle Bit Futurity finals a few times. Patterson always gravitated to the cow horse side of the performance horse world, appreciating the versatility of the sport.

Nancy Hyser

What started out as team pinning friends looking at horses ended up with Nancy Hyser getting her first cutting horse and gaining a lifelong passion for the sport.

“It’s all about the competitiveness and the strive for doing better,” Hyser said. “There’s always something that happens that pushes you further. The horses are incredible and athletic-it’s great just sitting up on one.”

While Hyser has now been cutting for 18 years, she says her biggest accomplishment is her medallion from the Quarter Horse Congress in the 35,000 Non-Pro. This year she is continuing to show in the non-pro and her goal is to stay in the top 5 in the affiliate.

Hyser believes that cutting is a partnership between the horse and rider, each contributing to do their part and says she is most proud of her development over the last two years of getting the cow in front of her horse. Hyser is continuing to focus her efforts and is planning on showing two horses later this month.

WHY NANCY USES CHTO:
“CHTO helps me get focused to do my job; many of the videos has really helped me with my plus points working the herd.”
