Showdown In Cowtown Makes Its Mark!

July 12th, 2015 by CHTO

A brand new type of cutting competition got underway this week that’s expected to inject $2-million back into the industry!

It’s called Showdown in Cowtown and it’s the brainchild of Jeremy Barwick, owner of Western Bloodstock, who is co-hosting it with the National Cutting Horse Association.

The event is a slot cutting, the first such competition in the sport, where only 100 slots are available for sale, making the payouts highly lucrative. The top 20 make the final (when all 100 slots are filled) with the winner earning $100,000 in the open, $60,000 in the Non-pro and $30,000 in the Amateur. The bottom hole in the final still payouts out double the entry fee.

There are two separate events, one in July in conjunction with the NCHA Summer Spectacular and in December that ties in with the Futurity.

Cutting Horse Training Online spoke with Jeremy at Silverado, Weatherford, TX where the first go round of the July event was underway.  Of the 100 slots available, Jeremy said 59 had sold for July,  a result he was pleased with for the first ever event. He told Simone Cobb he thinks December could even be a sell out with 70 slots already sold! Press play to watch.

https://youtube.com/watch?v=12_AYHX3Cak%3Frel%3D0

With 59 entered into the July event, the payouts will be $60,000 to win the Open, $35,000 in the Non-pro and $20,000 to the Amateur winner. The top 12 will make the final.

Slots cost $5,000, $3,500 and $2,500 in the Open, Non-Pro and unlimited Amateur divisions respectively.

The slot cutting takes no ties either into the final or to win first place. If the two people tie for champion, there will be a work-off for the buckle. Jeremy said this makes for exciting cutting action for spectators.

Points are not awarded to Horse of the Year and money won at the slot cutting does not count towards world standings. However Amateur earnings go towards lifetime earnings but not eligibility earnings.

The final takes place on July 12 during the NCHA Summer Spectacular in Fort Worth.

Jeremy said he believes the slot cuttings will catch on and expects to host more events in the future.

Todd and Heavy Metal, sired by Metallic Cat and out of Reyk It In, scored a 148 to clinch victory and $75,000 in prize money. It was Todd’s 5th Futurity win.

Bill Riddle Helps Set The Records Straight At the NCHA Hall Of Fame Banquet!

June 26th, 2015 by CHTO

You could say renowned trainer Bill Riddle did a thorough job cleaning up during the awards ceremony at the 2015 National Cutting Horse Association Convention.

But he didn’t have a broom and trash bags in his hands, he had a microphone!

A long-time ambassador for the sport, Bill was the emcee for the Banquet night that saw 23 people and 3 horses inducted into the NCHA Hall Of Fame.

Cleaning up? You ask?…. They were Bill’s own words about the theme behind this year’s inductees. He told the audience of more than 400 people that the NCHA really wanted to make sure they had no glaring gaps in their Hall Of Fame of people who had been inadvertently passed over and those who had given their time, energy and ideas to cutting, the association and helping others.

It was the mighty efforts of three men, Sam Shepard from Verbena, Al, James Hooper, Decatur, Al, and Chubby Turner, Weatherford, Tx, that were recognized with the Association’s highest honors, the Members Hall of Fame.

Others were inducted for their competition achievements, but even some of those had been overlooked in decades past, like Milt Bennett, Jim Calhoun, Greg Ward and Jim Gideon to name four open riders who have since passed away.

Bill told a story or had personal connection on almost every cutter inducted and spoke warmly and openly about his friendships with the three Member honorees: Sam, James and Chubby.

Cutting Horse Training Online caught up with Bill on the last day of the convention, who told us what a joy it was for him to honor all those people. Press play to watch.

James Hooper Receives Cutting’s Top Honor: NCHA Members Hall Of Fame Inductee!

June 25th, 2015 by CHTO

It was a proud night for James Hooper, who was inducted into the NCHA Members Hall of Fame during the 2015 NCHA convention at Grapevine, TX.

James, 70, was given cutting’s highest honor in front of more than 400 people, including many of his family and friends for his contribution to the sport.

Bill Riddle gave him a rousing introduction, before the crowd got to watch a video about James and his achievements in cutting, not just as a competitor but as a past president and ultimately an ambassador for the industry.

James, who is based in Alabama was the NCHA President from 1994-95 as well an executive board member for 6 years.

During his acceptance speech, James talked about the importance of being willing to make difficult and even unpopular decisions for the betterment of the industry as a whole.

He said when he was President, he put the Association first every time. James helped rewrite the NCHA constitution to create equal representation across the 8 regions. He brought about changes to competition classes to help stop people leaving the sport and invited input from grass roots members, which evolved into the annual NCHA convention.

CuttingHorseTrainingOnline.com spoke with James on the last day of the convention. Press play to watch below.

James has been a successful cutting horse competitor who was also been inducted into the NCHA Non-Pro Hall of Fame, with lifetime earnings of more than $850,000.

Chubby Turner Chuffed With His NCHA Hall Of Fame Induction!

June 23rd, 2015 by CHTO

It was cutting’s night of nights! More than 400 people turned out with their buckles shining and boots polished to honor those who have not only had success in the sport, but  more importantly, who have put their heart and soul into making cutting flourish.

No-one fitted the bill more than long-time trainer Chubby Turner, from Weatherford Tx, who was one of three people inducted into the NCHA Members Hall of Fame.

Bill Riddle introduced his friend by emphasizing him as the most “enthusiastic” cutter and recognizing his contribution to the association over more than 4 decades.

Chubby was president of the NCHA in 2009 and 2010, and has served on numerous committees over the years. He revolutionized showing by helping to introduce the practice pens at competitions, and he developed the World Series cuttings which gave older horses more events and hence more value.

Bill also joked about Chubby as a trend setter in the sport, after turning the black cowboy hat into a must-have accessory!

Chubby gave an emotional thank you speech to close out the night, saying his induction was his greatest achievement in the sport yet.

Cutting Horse Training Online caught up with Chubby the next day to see how it was all sinking in. Press Play to watch below.

Cutting’s $8-Million Man Shares His Tips & Tactics In The Show Pen!

June 13th, 2015 by CHTO

While he mightn’t actually be bionic, Phil Rapp’s track history in cutting certainly suggests something super human when it comes to winning events!
As the top money earner in the history of the sport, more than $8.4-million to date, Phil has truly spent his life showing and training cutting horses.
He recently shared this vast experience with around 25 amateurs and non-pros at an NCHA Cutting Academy clinic in Fort Smith, Arkansas sponsored by Waco Bend.
Phil zeroed in on rider’s skills in the herd, and emphasized the importance of driving forward for decisive cuts.
Phil revealed many gems including:
•  How to clear the herd on your cut
•  Why you need to use two hands sometimes to get a square stop
•  Why, if you’re having trouble on one side of the arena, it’s probably because of what you  may be doing on the other side
•  How waiting on your cow can help you get even with the cow
•  How to stay even, on both sides of the cow and why it’ll help your scores and much more….
Cutting Horse Training Online now features three videos from the clinic available to watch now!

Tell us your favorite nugget of wisdom from Phil Rapp below!
