Member Spotlight – Karl Jenkins

July 5th, 2019 by Simone Cobb

Karl Jenkins isn’t a stranger to hard work. Jenkins spent 46 years building a successful Chevrolet Dealership in Wapakoneta, Ohio which didn’t allow too much time for indulging his passion for horses. However, after retiring 3 years ago, Karl could pursue cutting horses to the full extent.

“It’s nice being retired. The days go by fast, but it sure is great being able to spend that time with my horses all day,” said Jenkins.

Jenkins has been in the saddle ever since he was 10 years old, running barrels and poles. In college, he got his first taste of cutting.

“Shorty Freeman let me turn back for him, and I was hooked,” Jenkins said. In his late 50’s, Jenkins purchased a very special horse, a daughter to Freckles Play Boy, Betty’s Little Freckles rose to the top time and time and time again. The duo never placed below second in any show they competed.

Pam Crouch

Pam Crouch grew up in East Texas, and always had a love for horses. Her family didn’t own any horses, but her aunt would always to take her to ride when time would permit.

In her adult years, she was finally able to have horses of her own. Around 1995 she fell in love with the cutting horse industry just by watching it. Pam credits her horse Dualin Dalton for her confidence in the show pen.

“He won a lot of money and allowed me to have great success in the show pen,” said Pam. She has spent the last 18 years as a member of the NCHA.

With a demanding job as an ER nurse, she hasn’t been able to haul to anything other than aged events until the last 6 years.

A few life changing events led her to the outskirts of the Cutting Capital of the World in 2012. Pam says she didn’t have any intentions of ending up there, but she loves it because of how convenient it is to make the shows. She plans to start hauling in the aged events in 2019 with a new horse now that she is able to focus more on her cutting career, with Ben Roberson as her trainer.

WHY PAM CROUCH USES CHTO: “In my downtime, if I can’t make it to a trainer’s house, CHTO makes it convenient for me to be able to learn from right here at home from top trainers. It never goes away. I am able to rewind it as many times as I need to and apply it to my runs.”

Reagan Box grew up in the city where horses weren’t a part of life for her and her family.

She later found herself breaking colts in Northern Georgia. At that time, Reagan was specializing in problem horses. After a few cutting bred horses came her way, she fell in love with the industry because their quality.

Her passion for horses and cow work brought her to Texas. She worked under a few trainers and then went out on her own.

Reagan was working for a trainer that had a horse they didn’t think was going to make the cut in the show pen. They told Reagan they were going to sell her for $500. She asked them if they would let her try to get her through a few runs before they completely gave up on her. Little did she know this horse would provide her with her most memorable moment in the show pen. Reagan took Quiejannas Winning Streak to Sweetwater, Texas and marked a 75.

Her plans are to keep improving as a trainer with hopes of becoming one of the top trainers in the industry.

WHY REAGAN USES CHTO:

“I’ve always worked for trainers or trained horses for myself in remote areas that didn’t have easy access to advise [from] other trainers. Cutting Horse Training Online provides me with a learning tool without having to travel by providing information from some of the top trainers.”

Sammy Broussard – Member Spotlight

Sammy Broussard

Sammy Broussard

Sammy Broussard has always had his hand in the horse business. His family was one of the first families to bring cattle into the state of Louisiana. Ranching was done on horseback for the Broussard family. In addition to their cattle operation, they also had race horses.

Broussard, from New Iberia, Louisiana, then found himself competing in team penning and working cow horse as a young man. He went to the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in 1999 to compete, and that is when he got to watch his first cutting horse competition. “This is the real deal! This is ultimate horsemanship!” Broussard remembered thinking to himself.

A few months later he entered a team penning that was followed by a cutting. He then found himself entered in the cutting as well. His first impression of the cutting horse industry he describes as “Great,” because of how willing everyone was to help turn back for him, even though he didn’t know anyone.

That following week he went to trainer Bob Bouget after being introduced by Bob’s son Boe. Every Wednesday night for the next three years Broussard found himself at his trainer’s house practicing.

He said it is hard to pick the most memorable show moment because, “Every time you have good cattle, your horse works good, and the judges mark you, it’s a good day in the show pen.” His most memorable moment is making the finals in the Will Roger’s Coliseum, after showing there for the first time on a horse he had trained.

MR DAGWOOD is the horse he credits for his success. Sammy Broussard said, “He always finds a way to win. I can count on him at any time.”

WHY SAMMY USES CHTO: “I find that it is a great place to get information from people who know so much and are so willing to share it. If this would’ve been around when I first started, I would’ve been able to learn certain things a lot quicker. This is a tremendous tool for people who are just getting into the industry and keeping them in it.”

Member spotlight: It wasn’t until her senior year at West Monroe High School that Addison Culp joined the school rodeo team.

She had grown-up around cow horses and always competed in barrel racing, but with the perception of how challenging the sport of cutting was she just couldn’t resist giving it a try.

“I really love cutting,” Culp said. “It came pretty natural to me. I like the pressure and feel as though I can go in with confidence and be straightforward with my [cow] pick.”

Although it was her first year cutting, Culp made the upcoming nationals that will be hosted mid-July in Wyoming. Culp says she plans on using her graduation money to send her longtime horse, a 14 year-old mare (her barrel horse and cow horse), Annie, to see her trainer Mason Griffin. She wants to tune her up and go for the NCHA World Titles in the $2,000 or $35,000 classes.

Despite her graduation and the end of her high school rodeo debut, Culp says she plans on continuing to cut in the NCHA.

Why Addie Loves CHTO:

“It’s very convenient and a great tool when I’m by myself and training. I can get on my phone in the practice pen and look at it while I’m training.”
