Barbara Brooks Claims First Futurity Title – 2015 NCHA Unlimited Amateur Champion!

It may have taken 15 years of dedication to pull off a win in the Will Rogers Coliseum but the taste of victory is just as sweet!

Barbara Brooks and Smash Mouse scored a 220 to win the Unlimited Amateur National Cutting Horse Association Futurity last Thursday night.

Smash Mouse is a home-bred horse by her sire Cat A Rey and out of Boonbay Smash. Barbara, who was the 2014 NCHA President, took home more than $9,000 for her win.

Barney Mac Smith Proudly Takes Out The 2015 NCHA $50,000 Amateur World Final

Barney Mac Smith over came some tough months on the road this year to end up victorious in the 2015 NCHA World Finals.

Barney and his mare One Red Mist held the lead to become the $50,000 Amateur Champions at Fort Worth.

Barney won a total of more than $42,000 throughout the year and the finals. He spoke with CHTO’s Simone Cobb about his win.


Michelle LeMaster Clinches 2015 NCHA $15,000 Novice/Non Pro Championship

It was a tight race, but nerves failed to stop Michelle LeMaster dominating in the 2015 NCHA World Finals.

Michelle rode El Gato Bonito to victory in the $15,000 Novice/Non Pro Championship, taking home a total more than $42,000.

Michelle, who came second in the Finals average spoke to CHTO’s Simone Cobb about her year on the road.


Casey Crouch Crowned NCHA $5,000 Novice World Champion

After a year-long jostle for first place between the top two competitors in the NCHA $5,000 Novice World Title, it was Casey Crouch from Texas who finally clinched the buckle on finals night at Fort Worth.

Casey and Twistin At The Roxie finished on top of the standings, earning almost $42,000 for the year, just $106 ahead of reserve champion Dusty Nelson on Rue Du Ichi.

Casey came into the finals in the lead but dropped to second after the first go.

Casey was elated and emotional about the win, telling CHTO’s Simone Cobb it was a bit of a surprise at the very end…..


Marilyn Jo Franz Claims First Futurity Buckle On Home Bred Horse!

Twenty six years of persistence and passion finally paid off for Marilyn Jo Franz when she won the 2015 NCHA Amateur Futurity Final in Fort Worth.

Marilyn marked a 217 aboard Hawks Desire, a horse she bred by EBR Kitty Hawk out of Tina Bars Annie to beat out a large field of 30 competitors.

Marilyn, from Stillwater, Oklahoma, won more than $9,000 to take her total earnings to just under $100,000.

She told CHTO’s Simone Cobb it was a dream come true, made more special by having her nephew, Alex Franz compete in the same final on a horse also by her stud, EBR Kitty Hawk.


Top Honors For Rieta Dufurrena In the NCHA Ltd Non Pro Futurity Final

Consistency won the day and the champion’s check for Rieta Dufurrena, who took out the Limited Non Pro Final at the 2015 NCHA Futurity in Fort Worth.

Rieta marked a 220 on Stevie Rey Von, the pair’s third such score at the show to wrap up the win. They competed against a field of 30 finalists and took home $9,426 for the title.

Peter Shumack of Australia and Fair Lady Flash, by Purdy Boy Flash out of Ristos Fair Lady, earned the Reserve title with a 217.5

Ashley Bosack Wins The $2,000 Limited Rider World Champion Buckle

Ashley Bosack clinched her first world championship after a year of hauling for the 2015 NCHA World Championship in the $2,000 Limited Rider division.

Ashley, who works for trainer Mike Wood, came into the finals at Fort Worth some $7,000 ahead of her nearest rival. Ashley won $17,584 for her efforts this year.

She dominated the event on Tachitas Brigalena and spoke with CHTO’s Simone Cobb about her win.

Josh Cogburn Comes From Behind To Scoop The $2,000 Ltd Rider Show Buckle

Josh Cogburn put in a strong performance at the 2015 NCHA World Finals to finish up as Show Champion in the $2,000 Limited Rider division.

Josh rode Miss Little Gunner to win the average after coming into the finals in 11th place. Josh finished in 5th place overall, taking home a little over $7,000 in total earnings.

Josh spoke to CHTO’s Simone Cobb about his win and excitement to go pro down the track.


Michelle Barnes Beats Out Tough Competition To Win Her First NCHA World Championship

With just $300 between the top three competitors, Michelle Barnes put on a timely show for the judges to take out the buckle in the $5,000 Novice/Non Pro division of the 2015 NCHA World Finals.

Michelle rode Timely Addition to seal the deal with an impressive 227 in the final go at the Watt Arena, Fort Worth. Michelle also won the average at the finals.

Michelle is a client of Arizona trainer Mike Woods, who had 16 horses make it to the World Finals this year.

Timely Addition is a One Time Pepto gelding out of Flo Little Lena. Michelle won more than $30,000 in earnings this year.

She spoke to CHTO’s Simone Cobb and said it’s the first time she’s hauled for a world title. Laughing, she added, “it would probably be my last”.


Matt Gaines Takes Out The 2015 Open World Championship On An Emotional High!

A spectacular score, a standing ovation, tears of joy….

Matt Gaines capped off a phenomenal year taking out the 2015 NCHA Open World Championship as fans cheered, hollered and applauded them in the Watt Arena at Fort Worth!

Matt and Special Nu Baby gave the crowd a run to remember, scoring a massive 231 to finish the year on a high, both figuratively and literally!

Despite being the undisputed leader for months, Matt and his wife Tara were both emotional and elated after sealing the victory.

It’s been an outstanding year of accomplishments for Matt and Special Nu Baby, winning five of eight Mercuria events this year, four of them consecutively. The formidable duo also made history when they scored an amazing 234 at the El Rancho Futurity, equaling the all-time record set by Phil Rapp and Don’t Look Twice.

Special Nu baby is a mare by Dual Rey and out of Nu I Wood and is owned by Gary & Shannon Barker from Oklahoma.

Matt spoke to CHTO’s Simone Cobb and says he had a special bond with Special Nu Baby.


Alice Walton’s Secrets To A Successful Breeding Program

You could call it the end of an era when Alice Walton’s ranch Rocking W, and her barn of 91 horses goes under the hammer on September 22nd.

Alice has bred a number of cutting horse champions including Boon San Kitty, Horse of the Year 2004 and 05/06 Classic Challenge winner ($498,188.29 in earnings), and Rockin W, 2009 Futurity champ ($329,722 in earnings) to name just two.

CHTO’s Simone Cobb spoke to Alice at length about her life and times in the industry at her Millsap ranch. This is just a small part of what she had to say about her breeding program where she gives away key insights into the development of her bloodlines.

The first day of the sale on Sept 21 will see the ranch equipment go under the hammer and buyers can view the horses, while the ranch itself and the horses will be sold the following day.

The 91 dispersal includes: five broodmares, two stallions, 26 foals in utero, 23 weanlings, 18 yearlings, 10 two-year-olds, eight three-year-olds, eight show horses, three ranch horses and one donkey.

All show horses and three-year-olds have been trained by Jesse Lennox, Alice’s trainer for the past seven years. Jesse rode Boon San Spoon to victory at the 2015 Summer Spectacular Classic Challenge.

Cade Shepard Rides To Victory In The 2015 NCHA Non Pro Derby

If cutting is about anything, it’s about family. Young Cade Shepard brought this point home when he won the Non-Pro Derby Final in the 2015 NCHA Summer Spectacular at Fort Worth.

Scoring a solid 222, Cade rode Twistful Thinking, a horse trained by his Grandfather Sam Shepard that he and his Dad Austin Shepard purchased. Both his Sam and Austin were turning back for Cade while he competed.

At just 13 years of age, this dedicated young cutter has won almost $180,000 to date, including the $15,000 in earnings from his Non-Pro title. Cade also came second in the 5/6 Yr Old Classic Final at the Summer Spectacular which saw him earn another $15,000 pay check.

Youth Cut Up A Storm For Summer Spectacular Scholarship Finals!

The was an enthusiastic crowd cheering on the youth competitors of the 2015 NCHA Summer Spectacular scholarship finals! Riders could borrow any horse to compete, which saw many proven horses enter into the fray and make for some great cutting action!

If cutting was judged on charisma, Ryan Rapp would be unbeatable!

But the young jokester won on pure skill yesterday when he took out the Junior Youth Scholarship Final at the National Cutting Horse Association Summer Spectacular.

He rode SpookysTimeToShine, and notched up the top score of the whole show so far, an impressive 229!

The crowd went wild when Cade Hansma hit some big stops to take out the Senior Youth Scholarship Final at the National Cutting Horse Association Summer Spectacular last night!

It was a winning combination of Cade’s youthful confidence and her horse Little Pepto Cat’s experience that saw them score a 225 for victory. Little Pepto Cat has won in excess of $300,000.
