Best buddies – Lance and Cade as youths killing time at a horse show.
After slingin’ dirt and cashing checks in the cutting horse youth and non-pro classes, childhood friends and successful showmen, Lance Cooper and Cade Shepard are now beating the pros at their own game!
They both handed in their non-pro cards one day apart after their wins in the Summer Spectacular Derby last year. Shepard had won almost a million dollars and Cooper was approaching a half a million when they became open riders.Keep On Reading!
Cade Shepard would no doubt be feeling some kinda high after winning his 3rd major title in the Will Rogers Coliseum at the 2016 NCHA Super Stakes.
Cade laid down a 222 aboard Some Kinda Highbrow, and then backed that up by sharing second place with Alannah Chalmers when he notched up a 220. Cade’s second horse was Twistful Thinking, the horse he won the Super Stakes Non-Pro on last year.
Cade is the youngest person to ever win three Non-pro Triple Crown events (in just 12 months to boot!). He has won a total of more than $45,000 from the event, taking his lifetime earnings to approximately $345,000.
The 14-year-old told CHTO’s Simone Cobb his goal is to smash his Dad, Austin Shepard’s record.
Some Kinda Highbrow, was sired by High Brow CD and out of Some Kinda Memories and now has earnings just shy of $250,000.
Alannah Chalmers, who shared the reserve buckle with cade, rode Smooth Very Smooth, by Smooth As a Cat and out of One Time Soon.
If cutting is about anything, it’s about family. Young Cade Shepard brought this point home when he won the Non-Pro Derby Final in the 2015 NCHA Summer Spectacular at Fort Worth.
Scoring a solid 222, Cade rode Twistful Thinking, a horse trained by his Grandfather Sam Shepard that he and his Dad Austin Shepard purchased. Both his Sam and Austin were turning back for Cade while he competed.
At just 13 years of age, this dedicated young cutter has won almost $180,000 to date, including the $15,000 in earnings from his Non-Pro title. Cade also came second in the 5/6 Yr Old Classic Final at the Summer Spectacular which saw him earn another $15,000 pay check.
Cade spoke to CHTO’s Simone Cobb about his win and his plans to start his own cow herd.
