Preview: Geoffrey Sheehan: Starting Two Year Olds on Cattle (Blast From The Past Video)

Geoffrey Sheehan is a true horseman. His skills are evident in the way he handles young horses, in this case introducing two year olds to cattle. We have had lots of requests for videos on how to start two year olds on cattle.  If you can open a gate up on a two year old, then you can start him on cattle. Geoffrey demonstrates exactly how to do that in this 5 part series on two different minded horses. One horse is slightly in front of the other, giving insight into how to progress them.

Part 1
Spud wants to keep everything slow and controlled! Especially as he walks circles, keeping the horse's hip up and under him, teaching him to reach in front of inside front foot with outside front foot and shoulder as he turns around to allow the horse to stay balanced through the turn.
Part 2
It has to be fun and the horse has to be aware of the cow. Spud likes to feel caution in a horse's feet as he walks towards the cow! That's why he is really consistent on making sure the horse backs a step as the cow moves.
Part 3
His filly is beginning to settle in, and now he can begin pushing her around with his feet by side passing her to release the cow and create a stop. Spud is not too concerned about how the filly turns around at this stage! It's more important that she is feeling the cow.
Part 4
Spud works another two year old that is a little brighter about the cow and feels it a little stronger, but he doesn't change the fundamentals.
Part 5
Spud never pulls a horse into a stop! He sits down and rides the hindquarters forward into the stop, which also creates collection. He starts stepping the horse's front end around to help allow him to eventually be able to change angles on a cow as his horses mature in their training.

How I got started: I worked for Graham Amos in Australia while at school. I came to the USA when I was 16 to rodeo but got side tracked because I was intrigued by cutting and saw how challenging and technical it was.
