Preview: Current NCHA Futurity Champion Gary Bellenfant Shows You How He Works Out Of The Herd!

2019 NCHA Futurity Champion Gary Bellenfant is true to his roots, as his training philosophy is all about the cow. His ranching roots can be seen in his horses, which display poise, expression and intelligence. In this 4 part series, Gary trains a range of three year olds on sour cattle. It’s a great opportunity to really observe how he handles both the cow and the horse to get the most done in a limited situation. Make sure not to skip his videos as it’s a treat because Gary chats on horseback about finding that sweet spot and quotes Buster Welch who used a great Mickey Mantle analogy!

Part 1
Gary emphasizes leniency and timing when it comes to working stale cows. To get the most out of the work, he explains that you shouldn't hurry the turn.
Part 2
In part two, Gary works another three year old on the same herd. In this case, the mare is going to be shown by an amateur so Gary demonstrates how to be subtle to help set the rider up for success. Gary warns that on these cows, if you open the mare up to do too much on the cow, you're inviting it mistakes.
Part 3
Again, Gary explains how the three year old he's training gets bored with sour cattle and how to get the best work. He shows you how to keep shape on cows that keep putting pressure on the horse.
Part 4
Gary sits atop a horse he just worked and goes into more detail about training. He talks about how to find the sweet spot on a cow to keep it where you want it and quotes Buster Welch on Mickey Mantle! Don't miss this!!!

Trainers in this Video

How I got started: I was training reined cow horses, and snaffle bitters. The cutting was really popular in the mid-70s and I ended up getting enthralled with it and I got a situation where I could start showing and it’s just grown since then.
