Preview: Phil Hanson: Show Horses on Cows

In this three-part series, Phil works a couple of non-pro 4 year olds, a green 5 year old and an Open 6 year old that tends to over rotate, all on re-run cattle. These videos are a good example of how to try and get something done on cows that are pushy and sour. Phil doesn’t get concerned, he just tries to get as good a work as possible with his primary focus being that his horses are trying.

Part 1
Phil works a couple of non-pro 4 year olds. With the first one being hard to get broke in the face and therefore leaves her alone with the bridle allowing her to get comfortable and work a few things out on her own.
Part 2
Phil trains a green 5 year old that has missed a lot of time due to injury and starts the work a little fresh but begins to settle in and read the cow all the way through the turn.
Part 3
This 6 year old open filly has a tendency to over rotate her turns. Phil works on trying to keep her up into the cow a little more.

How I got started: I grew up around horses. Dad was an all-around trainer, competing in AQHA events and reined cow horse. In 1983 I worked for a ranch in south Oregon, where I started colts. They focused on snaffle bit horses.
