Preview: John Mitchell: Working Round

John emphasizes the importance of keeping everything simple and correct at this time of the year (July) with his 3 year olds. John works them in his outdoor, round arena and gives us a great demonstration of how you can still get a lot done with your horses on one-time re-run cattle by keeping things controlled. Notice how consistent John is with every horse and how he lets his horses cut when the situation allows for him to do so.

Part 1
John wants to make sure that the first horse worked in this video finishes the turn. He talks about how he uses his feet to keep a horse gathered up. The second 3 year old wants to go too fast so John chips away at slowing her down. He reminds us not to get too bothered about the little things, as the biggest concern is the cow, and keeping everything smooth.
Part 2
John explains the importance of giving a horse boundaries when working a cow. He likes to feel his horses wait as they come out of the turn, and then go on with the cow to help keep things slow.
Part 3
John demonstrates how he likes to be able to push his horses to the head of a cow and be comfortable. This is what helps him compete on his horses with confidence.

Trainers in this Video

After a childhood spent in the saddle showing in western pleasure, English and cutting, John Mitchell decided early on that dropping the reins was the sport for him. Originally from Australia, Mitchell began riding horses for Winderadeen, a large quarter horse breeder in New South Wales.
