Preview: John Mitchell: Settling Cows

John settles a herd at the 2012 NCHA Futurity and talks about the importance of settling the herd for not only the first contestant but also the last. He wants to see the cattle blend and move around him comfortably, so it’s easier for the competitors to make their cuts. John also wants to make sure that he has walked past every cow so that the people watching the cattle get to see how it reacts to the horse.

Categories: Showing, Herdwork.
Part 1
John begins settling, by brushing the cattle against the back fence so they can feel him. He then wants to be able to move through the herd with each cow noticing and respecting him without being scared.
Part 2
John keeps settling the bunch and by now he wants to see the cattle be comfortable easing their way to the back fence without rushing. We also watch the first competitor compete on this set of cattle.
