Preview: Hayden Upton: Starting Two Year Olds on Cattle

Hayden started these colts seven weeks ago and is now introducing the cow to them. His main concern is to give his horses a reason to travel, and to get a change of direction when possible. Hayden keeps it extremely simple and emphasizes the importance of being aware of your horse’s thoughts towards the cow.

Part 1
Hayden demonstrates what he is looking for when he introduces the cow to his 2 year olds. He talks about the importance of being aware of what your horse's thought process is towards the cow.
Part 2
Hayden explains that he is not concerned about perfecting the stop or turn around at this stage! He wants to create movement and a change of direction to enhance the horse's curiosity towards the cow.
Part 3
This two year old works a faster cow which allows Hayden to demonstrate how he lets a horse run with the cow so the horse can explore and work some things out on his own.

How I got started: In 2008 I took out a loan for $20K to buy a High Brow Cat yearling filly then looked over every fence I could, to work out how to train her.
