It wasn’t just a major title that Reyzin The Cash won in the 2015 NCHA Open Derby Final, it was redemption.
That was the belief of the champion horse’s owner Tom Bailey, after trainer Gary Gonsalves rode to victory with a 227 during the Summer Spectacular in Fort Worth.
The horse first made its presence felt at the 2014 NCHA Futurity, where its exciting style and cow smarts had it pegged as a favorite to take out the title. But it was not to be. Despite the disappointment, Gary, Tom and the horse put it behind them, to come back and claim the Derby buckle by a convincing 4 points!
Gary has been Tom’s head trainer for 12 years at Iron Rose Ranch in Weatherford. Tom, who lives in Carbondale, Co, says a great personal bond has been the secret to their long-lasting relationship in sport that has many ups and downs. He told CHTO’s Simone Cobb, while he’s excited for Reyzin The Cash’s future, you can’t expect to win everything in a sport with so many variables.
