How I got started: I’ve always ridden horses, but my Dad came home one night and said we are going to do something different with our horses and it was to go cutting! We got around the club cuttings in central California and then went to Leon Harrel clinics in the late 1970’s. I worked for Leon for three years. Then I got with Chubby Turner, he was like my second family and he is so exciting and taught me so much about showmanship. I worked for Phil Rapp and his Dad at Rapp Ranch in Napa, CA and also the Hanley Ranch but it wasn’t until 1991 that I went out on my own in Chico, CA.
Biggest mistake I’ve made in cutting: Well I’m not sure if it’s a mistake, but for some reason I always cut bad cattle in the semi-finals at the NCHA Futurity.
Biggest myth about cutting: That the cutting horse training life is a glorious life! It’s really a lot of work and at the end of the day if you come out ahead you’ve done well.
Favorite quote: “Life is tough! But it’s even tougher when you’re stupid!” – John Wayne
Most memorable moment in cutting: When I won the Super Stakes on Style O Bar in 2000! Because I had to have a work off against Greg Welch and to be able to win against a man of his caliber is memorable.
Training philosophy: Don’t be afraid to fail, don’t give up and keep trying.
