Preview: Wayne Robinson: Breaking In Colts – Day 1

Wayne Robinson’s skill as a gifted horseman is on show here as he handles a breaker for the first time. In this nine-part series, which features the first four videos here this month, you’ll see Wayne begin with groundwork and finish in the saddle in just two days. The first four videos show Wayne introducing the colt to the round pen, lariat and saddle.

Part 1
Wayne's first goal with a colt is for the horse to not see Wayne as a threat and to understand the basic principles of pressure. He ropes this colt and then desensitizes him with the lariat to prepare for the saddle. He stresses the importance of building a horse's confidence by identifying the small changes and tries a horse gives you.
Part 2
Wayne saddles this colt for the first time, and makes sure he works on both sides of the horse to help him relax. He does some cinch preparation and doesn't use hobbles to make a horse stand because he wants it to be the horse's idea to get comfortable. Once saddled, he lets the horse go and wants the horse to do whatever he has to do to accept the saddle. Wayne's goal is to finally see smooth transitions up to the lope and for the horse to be comfortable enough to stop and yield hindquarters and look at Wayne.
Part 3
The colt wants to find a release from the pressure by trying to go out the gate he came in. Wayne stays persistent and shows the horse that there is no release there, by making the right thing easy and the wrong thing difficult.
Part 4
Parts III and IV are similar videos but there is a lot going on here. It's a great demonstration of taking the time you need to take to get the change you're looking for. The change he wants is for the horse to be comfortable moving off pressure and to yield the hindquarters. This persistence helps Wayne on his first ride with the colt.
