Alice Walton Rocking W Ranch Interview

Alice Walton’s Rocking W Ranch has been a major powerhouse in the cutting horse industry since 1983. Her horses have won numerous titles including the 2009 Futurity and the 2004 NCHA Horse of the Year. However she is hanging up the bridle!

“It is time for me to pull back and focus on other things that really matter to me. I opened Crystal Bridges in 2011, and that takes a lot of my time. I also have other philanthropic interests that I want to focus on,” she said.

So we sat down with her and discussed how she orchestrated her successful breeding program, how to maintain a good owner/trainer relationship and what her thoughts are on how to grow our exciting sport.

How I got started: I started at 10 cleaning stalls. At 14, I was breaking colts for five bucks a ride. In the summers, I went to Gerry Hansma’s, loping and riding two year olds. After high school I worked for him full time.
