Shay Martin grew up on his grandpa’s ranch. Horses and cows have always been his passion. But he didn’t start cutting until 2016, when his mother introduced him to the sport.
“The first time I felt my horse hook onto the cattle, I was hooked ever since then,” he said.
He bought two young horses that he hopes to show and breed with. He competes in the Western Nebraska Cutters club (WNC) in Nebraska and gets help from local trainers as well as Kenny Platt in Colorado when he can make the trip.
Martin’s greatest achievement was winning the non-pro buckle at the WNC local club show. He had to show consistently all year since the buckle was based on his total annual points.
Martin’s favorite part of cutting is watching amazing horses do what they love and what they were bred and born to do.
His goal is to compete in the Futurity on a horse he bred. He hopes to get his horses trained and go show at the bigger shows in Texas and Oklahoma.
Why Shay Uses CHTO:
“Living in the middle of nowhere, I don’t always have the luxury of riding with a trainer so CHTO has been a big help. I use what I’ve learned from various videos of different trainers and apply their method to my horses.”
