Preview: Gerald Alexander: Working Two Year Olds on Cattle

Gerald demonstrates how he cleans a horse’s front end up that is limited in the turn around. He wants to see the inside front foot take a step back and across so the feet aren’t too forward in the turn, once he has isolated the hindquarters. He also talks about how he likes his 2 year olds to have their nose tipped towards the cow when traveling with the cow. In part III, Gerald works a filly that is scared of cattle and does a lot of counter bending around the cows to help her relax, showing her that she can push the cows around and move their feet.

Part 1

Gerald tries to do as little as possible with his hands as he is working on trying to get the horse to halt and pay more attention to the cow. He wants to see them off the bridle in the stop which helps them initiate the draw, which is why he backs the horse to prepare his feet for the turn.

Part 2

Once Gerald has his horse moving forward and bent round his inside leg at the trot, he comes back to a walk. He isolates the hindquarters by using his outside rein and leg to bring the shoulders and front end around while looking for that inside front foot to step back and across. He also wants to see his 2 year olds have their noses tipped in towards the cow when traveling with the cow, keeping them focused.

Part 3

This 2 year old is scared of the herd. Gerald builds her confidence by counter bending her to the outside showing her that she can move the cows and is in control of their feet as they are move away from her. He also emphasizes the importance of making sure this horse stays up against the cow when traveling around the arena. She needs to be able to handle feeling a little pressure from that cow, as she wants to run away from it by getting her shoulders and mind off.
