Preview: Tarin Rice: Creating Consistency in Two Year Olds

The 2012 Co-Futurity Champion, Tarin Rice, likes to keep training cutting horses simple. He emphasizes consistency in what you present to the horse from the 2 year olds all the way through. In this two-part series, Tarin trains two 2 year olds on cattle showing the fundamentals he calls on time and time again.

Part 1
Tarin explains that the "basics are the same, stop, back and get them to turn and be soft about it." The level of responsibility may be different but basically it's all the same. Tarin doesn't like to step by the cow until he feels the horse relax and soften. He also demonstrates why he doesn't like to push a horse's hip up into the cow too much or get a horse's shoulders off the cow too much.
Part 2
In part two, Tarin talks about what lead he wants his horses to be on if he has to lope to keep up with the cow, but preferably he likes to be trotting! Tarin likes to stay inside the cow if it is pushing on him, and when it breaks away he, then, likes to get outside the cow because it gives him time to get a stop, back and then turn with the cow on his 2 year olds.

How I got started: Family tradition. Biggest mistake I’ve made in cutting: Too many too list. I make them everyday. Biggest myth about cutting: That it’s all the horse when you drop your hand.
