Preview: Jason Clark: Teaching Three Year Olds to Rate a Cow

Jason wants his horses soft in his hands and feet before he works them which allows him to teach a horse how to slow down and rate a cow. He demonstrates how he likes his horses to turn around when dry working them calling it a ‘gate turn’ because it keeps them straight.

Part 1
Jason leaves his hand down when the cow comes into the arena because he wants the horse to learn to take responsibility straight away. This horse is a little fresh but Jason keeps things pretty slow because he believes if his horses can work a cow slowly then the horse can handle the momentum better when it picks up.
Part 2
In part two, Jason continues working the same mare and keeping it slow and steady. He wants his horse soft, with her head down and rating with the cow. He works on her weaker side and says training like this calls for a lot of patience.

Trainers in this Video

How I got started: I grew up in California. Dad was a trapper who had a 3,500 mile radius area that he controlled. In that circular region, there were multiple cow horse trainers, lots of legends such as Greg Ward, Bobby Ingersoll, also the best cutter, Leon Harrell.
