Preview: How To Use Your Feet When Working Cattle

This two part video series, about how and when to use your feet whilst working cattle, is a follow up to Winston’s videos of how to use your feet when working the flag. He shows you what part of the horse he presses on to step his horse up to a cow and what part he presses on to get away from the cow.

Categories: Training, Beginners.
Part 1
Winston explains which foot he uses to control the shoulders of a horse and why. He also explains why you might want to let a horse get away from the cow if the horse lacks cow and pushes up through the turn.
Part 2
Winston explains why he puts his feet in a different position to teach his horse to step to a cow and get away from the cow. He also explains why it's important for a horse to start the turn with his nose first.

Trainers in this Video

How I got started: We did all of the 4H stuff and it was a progression of disciplines until I started working a horse on a cow and knew that’s what I wanted to do. Biggest mistake I’ve made in cutting: That I didn’t haul enough for the world in 2005.
