Get Coached With Matt Gaines

July 1st, 2019 by Simone Cobb

Eight-million-dollar trainer Matt Gaines is a big believer in coaching. It’s why he and other leading trainers go to each other’s ranches to work horses: to learn from each other and pick up on things they may not be seeing or feeling themselves.

In fact, our featured trainers make use of CHTO videos to keep abreast of what other trainers are doing, so they are not left behind and to help stay competitive. It’s also why he likes to give clinics. Simply put, coaching produces success!

It’s why all professional sports have coaches as Gaines has repeatedly pointed out, cutting is no different.

“I can look back over my career and there has been numerous times when I have felt out of sync or my own program doesn’t feel right. I will call people who I know share the same theory of cutting and same basis of the program,” Matt explained. He tells how his experience with contacting other trainers, such as Paul Hansma or John Mitchell, in times of need has helped him realize the small training habits that may need to be tweaked. In Gaines opinion, that one adjustment can be the catalyst for lots of improvements to come.

Gaines is one of CHTO’s coaches. Did you know you have the opportunity to be personally coached by Gaines and other leading trainers without leaving home? It’s called Get Coached and is as simple as sending us a video via text!

Gaines has coached people like horsemanship guru, Pat Parelli, who started cutting in recent years. He used our Get Coached service. In one video Gaines critiqued of Pat’s, he emphasized a simple adjustment that can produce a big improvement: not allowing your horse to come out of the stop and begin to turn before the cow does.

He explained that the horse in the video is not completing the stop. This can cause the horse and rider to get out of position, especially with a particularly dull herd of cattle. Covering and remaining straight with the cow is a major part of having a clean run Gaines said.

As a solution, he suggested always remembering to get all the way across the cow, holding the stop longer, and allowing that cow to pull you and your horse through, in order to remain in unison.

Gaines said it is important to use technology like Get Coached and CHTO videos to stay competitive, because that is what successful people do.

He said coaches help keep us accountable in a way we simply can’t do on our own. Plus he added, it’s a lot more fun to interact and get to know the trainers while learning, improving and competing at shows.
