Preview: Rob Hodgman: Teaching Two Year Olds About Stop

In this two part series, Rob talks about having more patience with your horses, and that we are always in a hurry to go catch a cow into the turn and that will lose the stop. Rob emphasizes that he doesn’t mind hurrying out of the turn but be soft going into it! Rob gives this commentary while his son James works the horses.

Part 1
Rob doesn't like to do a lot of work in the stop! He does it on the way to the stop because he wants them comfortable, and confident to go stop the cow. Rob gives commentary whilst his son James works the horses.
Part 2
Rob's main concern is to let his horses feel they have had a win. He says don't get too concerned at this stage in their 2 year old training about them having to hold a cow! He would like to see a horse go stop a cow.

How I got started: My reined cowhorse futurity prospect Commander Mark wouldn’t rein so we went cutting. He was Co Champion in 1983 at my first cutting futurity. I have spent the rest of my life being challenged and tested by this sport.
