Preview: Phil Dawson: Tuning Aged Event Horses

Phil is working his show horses a week before a major event and talks about the importance of making sure your horse neck reins well to help with your cuts. He also works on building his horse’s confidence to help them recover from any mistakes! This is key to minimizing or even eliminating penalties.

Part 1
Phil demonstrates how well he wants his horses neck reining! He talks about dividing the arena into thirds, which helps determine how he lets a cow pull his horse through the turn.
Part 2
Phil talks about the solid bridle he is using on this three year old, because he is a cowy horse and wants to make sure he has control of his horse whilst making his cuts.
Part 3
Phil works a four year old and talks about why he likes to work around and re-run cattle on his older horses. He also explains why he works in a snaffle sometimes on his show horses.
Part 4
Phil works a six year old non-pro horse and concentrates on the horse's technique rather than the cow. Because he says that when horses reach this age they have usually been shown so much that there is not much more you can teach them about a cow.

How I got started in cutting: Dad was always interested in cutting but never competed. We used to go watch the Futurity at Tamworth every year and I guess that planted the seed.
