Richard grew up farming in Adrian, Oregon, and as a young boy he realized he wanted to train cutting horses before he had even seen a fully trained cutting horse. Richard was sorting pairs on his grandpa’s horses in the school holidays and they sort of worked a cow by themselves. That’s when he thought that was the coolest feeling so he decided to become a trainer. He spent many hours with neighbors and friends such as Chris Dennight and the Williamson’s discussing philosophies and various approaches to training. Ricky Dunn also had a huge influence on his program in the early days. Ricky would arrive throughout the day unannounced and if Richard had sweat on his horses, Ricky would be upset and tell him that was not necessary. This was a defining moment for Richard’s career as he focused on how to work on a horse’s mind and the number one objective is to turn with the cow. Since partnering with Todd Nelson in 2011, Richard has consistently topped the Western Bloodstock NCHA two-yr-old Futurity sale with their graduates having won in excess of $3.5  million in earnings in the show pen to date. Richard and his wife Hope (a very accomplished barrel horse trainer who’s horses have been to the NFR) live in Parma, Idaho, with their two boys training for the public.
