The Hansma Brothers, Winston and Paul are two of the biggest names in cutting. Between them they have won in excess of $7.5 million and both have been NCHA Open Futurity Champions. They grew up on a ranch in Canada and were drawn to Texas and the sport of cutting early on. They found their way in training cutting horses by thinking outside the square which brought them much success and made many other trainers sit up and take notice. Their fresh perspective allowed them to develop a training program at Bar H Ranch that has now become a norm for many. That program included holding the line, which means staying up against the cow on either side of the arena. We chatted to Paul and Winston about how they got started, what influenced them and the mark they’ve left on the industry. This is their story.

How I got started: My dad started our family in 4H. We showed in halter, english and western. Bill Collins and Walter Thiessen were big influences, as well as my dad and Bill Riddle. Biggest mistake I’ve made in cutting: Not trusting my horse enough.
