Cash Carpenter Claims 2018 Amateur Derby at Summer Spectacular

Cash Carpenter was over the moon with his win in the Will Rogers when he took out the Amateur Derby title at the 2018 Summer Spectacular in Fort Worth.

The 17-year-old rode Iggy Katzalea to mark a 218, edging out Kristin Spencer Morias on Wherever I May Roan by half a point.

Cash told CHTO’s Simone Cobb he named his horse after one of his favorite singers Iggy Azalea.

Nelson Vivas Takes Out 2018 Super Stakes Amateur Derby Title

It was a dream come true for Nelson Vivas who claimed victory in the 2018 Super Stakes Amateur Derby Championship. Nelson, who’s only been cutting for 3 years, rode Futurity Champion Playboy is Smooth to mark a 216 to win. He told CHTO’s Simone Cobb he’s only had 3 rides on his horse and immediately gelled with him. Reserve Champion, John Rockey secured his spot with a 214.5 on Dureyngo Kid.

Sue Christensen Dominates Amateur Derby Final at 2017 Summer Spectacular

Despite a whirlwind schedule, Sue Christensen from Walton, NE, still managed to dominate the Amateur Derby Final at the 2017 NCHA Summer Spectacular.
Sue rode Auspicious Ruby Cat to mark 219, some four points ahead of the field. Sue and her horse, by Auspicious Cat out of Ruby Mate, took home more than $5,000 for the win.
She told CHTO’s Simone Cobb a simple yoga technique helped her relax and win her first major aged championship.

Ryan Smith won Reserve Champion on Suen Or Lator with a 215.

John Hulsey Claims Amateur Derby Title at 2016 NCHA Summer Spectacular

John Hulsey from Gainsville, Ga, clinched a convincing victory in the Amateur Derby Final at the 2016 NCHA Summer Spectacular.

John laid down a 219 aboard R Smokin Cat to take the title some 5 points ahead of the field.

R Smokin Cat is by Dual R Smokin and out of Playgirls Cat and was bred and raised by John. John and the horse earned almost $8,000 for the win.

John told CHTO’s Simone Cobb that it made his first buckle in the Will Rogers even sweeter.

John Thigpen Jr was Reserve Champion on Barbies Blue Cat with a 214, and Vic Pannell scooped up third aboard Metallic Sister just a half point behind.
